Crash with alleged drunk driver kills bus driver, injures others

A Florida high school track team was returning home from a meet in Jacksonville when tragedy struck at about 2:30 a.m. The bus, which was traveling west on Apalachee Parkway in Leon County, was hit by an eastbound car as the driver tried to make a left turn. The impact of the crash caused the bus to careen into a traffic light pole. The 65-year-old driver of the bus was killed.

Of the 33 passengers on the bus, two coaches and two students were transported to a hospital for minor injuries. The rest of the students and coaches who had been traveling on the bus were assembled in a nearby parking lot of a Wal-Mart store until they could be reunited with their families. School officials praised first responders for their professional handling of the situation and for making the process as smooth as possible.

Even though she wasn't injured in the crash, the 25-year-old female driver of the Camry isn't doing as well. She was arrested on the scene for driving under the influence. The driver was bonded out of jail the next day. A week after getting out of jail, she turned herself in to the sheriff's office after there was a warrant out for her arrest for a DUI manslaughter charge.

A parent of one Florida high school student expressed sadness over the whole situation, lamenting the tragic consequences of drunk driving. She is praying for everyone involved, including the woman charged with causing the crash. In addition to any workers' compensation death benefits that would likely be paid to the deceased victim's family, they may have a cause of action for wrongful death against the accused driver. While no amount of money can replace the loss they have suffered, proof of the drunk driver's guilt may advance the family's cause in a civil action seeking monetary damages.
