Driver flees fatal crash, later located by Florida Highway Patrol

When local law enforcement officers and troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol respond to the scene of a hit-and-run accident, one of their first priorities is to locate the vehicle and driver responsible. In some cases, the search can take several days, weeks or even months. However, sometimes, the search ends within minutes or hours, which was the case in a recent fatal crash.

The Florida Highway Patrol and local officers responded to a hit-and-run accident that occurred at approximately 7:45 p.m. on a recent Monday. Upon arrival, they discovered that a vehicle had struck a motorcycle. Its rider was rushed to an area hospital, but despite the efforts of medical personnel, the 34-year-old man succumbed to his injuries.

Within hours of the accident, officials located the vehicle and driver believed to be responsible for the accident. The 48-year-old man was found at home, and he did not appear to have suffered any injuries. Reportedly, he was making a left turn when his pickup truck hit the motorcycle. He now faces charges in the fatal hit-and-run.

The motorcycle rider's family retains the right to file a wrongful death claim against the driver in civil court. The burden of proof the family must meet in connection with this fatal crash is less than is necessary in a criminal action. Therefore, it is only necessary to show that the negligent actions of the driver caused or contributed to the death of their loved one. If the court is satisfied that negligence is proved, damages as allowed by state laws may be awarded to the family.
